WELCOME TO ROUND 3 OF NKC 2024!

Welcome to Dunkeswell Raceway. Round 3 of NKC 2024 and the decider for the Southern Cup.

It’s great to be back at Dunkeswell following a fantastic 2023 event. The track has changed ownership since then and Sergii and his team have been investing heavily in the facilities and is on course to becoming one of the very best kart racing facilities in the UK. In case you missed it, Friday practice is available and may be either be paid for in advance here or you may pay on the day.

We have appointed a new clerk of the course, Ben Edwards. Ben is a highly experienced and capable clerk and we are pleased to have him on board for the rest of the season. He will work track-side along with our regular Assistant Clerk, Gary Livesy, to ensure the smoothest possible running of the event. We’re sure they’re going to make a great team.

After the success of the trackside fuel testing at Forest Edge, we are continuing with using the nominated fuel station and pump. Fuel must be purchased from pumps 7 or 8 of the BP petrol station Turks Head Lane, Exeter Rd, Honiton EX14 1BQ. Click here to view location on Google Maps. The petrol station is open 24 hours and you can purchase it from this Thursday.

The only fuel allowed is the E10 regular unleaded. NKC 2024 stickers will be placed on the pumps to help identify them. NKC will be using this fuel as our control when testing so please make sure you get the correct fuel. TKM are exempt from this rule and can purchase any pump fuel. We have answered some FAQs in the section below.

Dunkeswell Raceway have invested in a CCTV system which covers the whole track and scrutineering. The stewards will be making use of this when reviewing incidents. The bar and cafe at the track will be open every day and evening (Food until 8pm and bar until 10pm). You can pre-book by calling the track. The Euros will be on in the cafe.

There is racing on Saturday afternoon for the Rotax classes due to the limited running on Sunday. “God Hour” is still in place at Dunkeswell so racing will pause on Sunday from 11am-12pm. We plan to get five heats completed before this break but if incidents mean we are running behind, one of the heats may be moved to after the break.

We will be carrying out some more safety scrutineering and you may be called to the bay on Saturday. If you are called, you must bring your kart and your race tyres.

Only 1 mechanic per driver allowed on the dummy grid at all times. No-one else should be on the dummy grid other than the driver, mechanic and NKC staff. Every driver will be issued with a mechanic’s wristband which their mechanic must keep on to be allowed on to the dummy grid.

The team at Dunkeswell are looking forward to welcoming everyone from 10am on Thursday morning. Please do not block the roads queuing to get in. Dunkeswell have organised and are responsible for the paddock booking. They will have a plan of what’s been booked and what is free so please make sure you don’t park in someone else’s spot as you’ll only be asked to move. Please park carefully and be considerate of others.

Please read the key points, download the timetable and Rotax groups for Saturday testing, read the final instructions and finally sign on. We will be primarily communicating using the Alpha RaceHub app so please ensure you download it (see links above/right). Drivers also must complete their online scrutineering card so we have your chassis and engine numbers before racing starts on Sunday. Friday practice groups are different from Saturday. You will see which Friday group you are in when you sign on.

Tyre registration

There are only a small number of new drivers at this round. Those drivers must bring their tyres for scanning in to the system at reception on Saturday 8-8.30am. Please only bring one set.

If you are one of the new drivers at this round, your tyres must be used all day on Saturday providing the track is dry and you must complete minimum of 4 full practice sessions. Tyres must be presented to the scrutineers after your final session. If tyres are not sufficiently worn, you will start from the back of each heat. If you wish to run your tyres on Friday due to

Please make sure you turn up with the correct laser-etched tyres as pictured below. Dartford Karting will be at the event but they won’t be carrying many spare laser-etched sets so this is the time to make sure you have the correct tyres. There’s still time to buy them here.

SCOOTERS/BIKES – These must NOT be used while the track is in use (including lunch break). If the rider injures themselves or someone else, it will tie up our paramedics meaning the racing will stop. We don’t want to take steps to ban scooters and bikes altogether at our race meetings as we know many enjoy them in the evening but we will be forced to take these steps if this simple rule can’t be followed.

ELECTRIC SCOOTERS/BIKES – These are banned from Dunkeswell Raceway altogether. Please do not bring them.

KEY POINTS

  • Sign on is open – click ‘EVENT SIGN ON’ button below. All drivers must sign on in Alpha for Saturday and Sunday.

  • Friday testing is £65. You can pay on the day or enter here.
  • Sign on for Friday to be done in person in reception from 8.00am. All drivers need to collect a wristband to test.

  • SCOOTERS AND BICYCLES MUST NOT BE USED WHEN THE TRACK IS LIVE. ELECTRIC SCOOTERS AND ELECTRIC BIKES ARE NOT ALLOWED UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCE. LEAVE THEM AT HOME.

  • Arrive from 10am on Thursday morning. DO NOT QUEUE OUTSIDE ON THE ROAD. Camping is free from Thursday to Monday. Please leave the track by 10am Monday.

  • Cafe and bar will be open 9am to 10pm every day. Food served until 8pm. Football will be on.

  • Gates will remain open all weekend.

  • If you haven’t booked paddock space, please check the plan to make sure you are not taking a booked spot.

  • Dogs are allowed. Keep them on a lead and clean up after them.

  • No excessive music is to be played between the hours of 2100 – 0900
  • Generators off at 11pm

  • Respect the facilities. Do not drill in to the tarmac. You will have to pay for any damage caused.

  • Don’t wander in to the woods. Felling is being carried out.

Fuel FAQs

No, but please ensure your race fuel doesn’t become contaminated by anything else.

Why have you chosen E10, we normally use E5?2024-05-22T10:21:39+01:00

We have consulted with a number of engine builders on this who agree E10 is less likely to cause issues. Wright Racing Engines kindly provide the below insight:

“Rotax Max engines are low compression and as such derive no benefit from high octane or E5 based fuels. Countless dyno testing has shown that it is far more important to choose a well known brand from your local busy fuel station and ensure you stick with them. Other engines may benefit from E5 based fuels, however in Rotax classes the 10% ethanol for E10, which is derived from plant based additives, can result in a gain in power.”

Yes, we won’t be routinely checking them but please keep it in case we ask to see it.

FINAL INSTRUCTIONS

Health & Safety

We are expecting over 190 drivers, so it is important to stick to the Health & Safety rules to keep everyone safe. Spectators are welcome at no charge.

  • Scooters and bicycles must not be used when the track is live (including lunch breaks). Electric scooters or bikes are NOT allowed at all at Dunkeswell Raceway
  • Dogs on leads at all times. Clean up after them.
  • Traffic movement in the paddock must be kept to a minimum and limited to early morning/evening where possible.
  • Please keep young children nearby and safe.
  • Only officials will be allowed onto the live circuit.
  • Trollies are not permitted on the live circuit. Wait until the circuit is neutralised and you have permission to enter from the grid marshal.
  • Scooters and bicycles must not be used when the track is live.

Friday Testing

Friday testing can be booked here, though you are welcome to pay on the day. Signing on will start at 8.00am in the location stated on the timetable. All drivers must sign on even if they have paid online to receive their wristband for the day. Under 18s must bring their parent/guardian with them.

Paddock

Camping on site is allowed Thursday/Friday/Saturday/Sunday and you may arrive any time on Thursday from 10am. Do not block the public roads queuing. Gates will remain open all weekend.

The paddock is going to be busy, so please be courteous and don’t take up more space than necessary. Only park in either your booked space or a space that hasn’t been booked. Please leave the paddock clean and tidy and take old tyres home with you.

Please leave the paddock by 10am on Monday.

Schedule

The timetable for the weekend can be downloaded above and will be on display in the paddock. For race day we are publishing a running order only. Please make note of the order and listen out for Tannoy calls and Racehub app updates, so you know when your next session is approaching. It is the driver’s responsibility to be on the dummy grid on time.

Please ensure you are on the dummy grid at least 2 minutes before your session starts. The gate will close and you will not be allowed to join your race.

Tyre barcodes

If you raced at Round 1 or 2, you don’t need to register your tyres again until Round 4. If this round is your first NKC round of the season, you must come with your race tyres to have them registered. See the timetable.

Only laser-etched tyres are eligible for racing.

Scrutineering

All drivers must self-certify when signing on however we will be carrying out safety scrutineering in person at the scrutineering bay on Saturday morning. Karts will be pulled in at random. We may request that you bring your race tyres with you. Only one chassis and up to two engines are allowed and must be signed on in your Alpha account before racing starts.

Novices

If you have nominated to be a novice on entry, you will start your heats from the back of the grids. If you didn’t choose to be a novice on entry but have decided you’d like to be one please let one of the organisers know on Saturday. The organisers may compel a driver to start from the back should they deem this is required for safety reasons.

Hand-held starter policy

Hand-held starters must not be shared between karts.

Transponders

We only use AMB Mylaps transponders. If you are hiring, please check the timetable to find out where and when to collect.

Signing On & Drivers Briefing

Signing on for the weekend is now open. Please click on the ‘EVENT SIGN ON’ button above.

There will be still be a driver briefing in person on Saturday morning that you all must attend. Please see the timetable.

Kart recovery

Kart recovery can take a long time and can potentially hold up racing. The clerks and marshals will guide you so please listen to them. You may need to wait until the following session has been before you can return to the paddock.

If you find yourself and kart in a position that is causing a yellow flag, if it is safe, please do your best to move yourself and your kart out of the way otherwise you will impact the racing on track.

Post-session parc ferme

Other than the drivers involved in the session, nobody will be allowed into parc ferme until they have been given express permission by an official. Failure to follow this rule may result in your driver being disqualified from the session or receiving a penalty.

Abusive or threatening behaviour is not acceptable here or anywhere. We understand emotions run high, but parc ferme is not the place to air your frustrations with other drivers. You are expected to leave the area quietly and return to your paddock area without altercation. If you have a problem, you should report it to the steward.

Any driver witnessed abusing another driver in parc ferme will be automatically disqualified from the session. If it’s a practice session a 10-point penalty will be applied to your racing heats. This is very much a case of if you don’t have anything nice to say then don’t say anything at all. If we witness any abusive or threatening behaviour in the paddock from the driver or mechanic/family member or friend you are at risk of being thrown out of the whole meeting.

Formation laps – starting grid position

It seems some drivers may occasionally have found themselves in the wrong grid slot by the time they get to the start line. It is the driver’s responsibility to ensure they form up correctly on the rolling up lap. We will be watching for this more closely (see below) and drivers who gain an unfair advantage will be penalised.

Formation laps – tyre warming

Weaving is allowed in moderation. You must leave space to allow drivers to come through to take their position. If you spin, we will not wait for you.

Judicial

We have a great team of officials, but please remember they are human. We can try to give clarity on penalties where possible, but they cannot be overturned without compelling evidence. Official appeals will only be heard after A-finals.

  • Some of you will feel you’ve been penalised unfairly
  • Some of you will miss yellow flags and be absolutely sure they weren’t there
  • Some of you will get unfair nose cone penalties
  • Some of you will feel another driver got away without a penalty

We will do our best, but we will not be perfect. Please treat our officials with respect. And please remember that these things do tend to even out over the course of a championship.

Review procedure

Please make sure you are up to speed on the review procedure, though please note we are limited to the camera views provided by the live streaming team and the circuit CCTV. Most incidents will not be caught on camera, in which case, the officials’ decisions will stand unless you have very strong evidence that it is wrong.

Appeals

We have updated the appeals procedure in the regulations. Drivers will be allowed to appeal decisions from A Finals only. .

The system isn’t perfect

Not everything gets caught on camera and even when it does the pictures are often inconclusive, however, this will improve the accuracy of our stewarding.

Communication

Please ensure you download the Alpha RaceHub app (see buttons above) and please keep checking for notifications throughout the event. We will use it to update you of timetable changes, call drivers in to the clerk and for all other important information. It is your responsibility to be keep up with the updates to the running of the event so please keep your phones charged and ensure they are checked regularly.
